With many on the look out for the next thing to increase performance and re-jump-start their fat loss, some come across the idea of intermittent fasting. In easy terms, IF is fasting for a specified period of time. This time period can range from skipping a single meal every other day to not consuming anything for a block of hours every other day to going 24hrs without eating once in a while. Just like with almost anything, there is more than one way to skin this IF cat.
The premise behind IF is simply that our ancestors went through periods of abundance as well as periods of famine. There were times of “forced fasting” simply due to lack of prey and nothing to gather. Some of the science behind seems intriguing though mostly anecdotal.
Robb Wolf has written rather extensively on the topic of IF. He has a deal of info on his blog. He also has a number of articles in the Performance Menu Journal. I have a good number of these journals in my office at the gym if you’re interested. Robb states in these articles that while IF has shown promise and, indeed, results, it is not necessarily for everyone. He goes on to tell that until one reaches not only their goal weight or body fat level, but a plateau in training as well, IF should be left alone.
Do a little digging. Read a few blogs. Find a study if you can. Get back to me on this….
